Only conventions? Really?
This weekend, I went to my first business convention in a long time and I was stunned by some of the conversations that I had with exhibitors. Some of these small businesses are spending $1,000 or more on travel fees over 4 days AND THEY DON’T DO ANY BUSINESS ONLINE. You can get a simple e-commerce site with one year’s worth of hosting for $1,000. That is a portal for business to be done anywhere around the world. But, no. Rather, these businesses spend this money to travel to conventions for one-time revenue boosts that barely keep them cash-flow positive. Why do they do this? Mostly because they don’t have the time or knowledge to do anything else.
The biggest problem that I have is that the products of some of these businesses are AWESOME and nobody knows. I had some tasty chocolate, cheese, and wine at this convention, but if I were to search “tasty chocolate” or “tasty local wine” I would not see these businesses. In a day and age where so much business is done online, all I can say is, why?
Why do you travel so far and spend so much time at conventions when you could create an online portal for business for the same price as one of these weekends. Then, add a Google business page, Facebook and Instagram pages and let your product do the rest. Literally. Just take pictures of your products and put them on these platforms and don’t do anything else for a year. I guarantee you will get business from them. That is the power of the internet.
Do you want to know the sad truth about your conventions? Their power is limited to your customers remembering where they put that post-it note that has your email scribbled on, remembering to tell their friends when they see them in person next, and then your customer’s friend’s ability to remember your email address and communicate effectively to you which products they would like and the cost of each…all over EMAIL…
Some of you reading this must be on the same page as me thinking that this tactic is about as archaic as dinosaurs. I feel your pain.
You need to build a brand online to build passive income or else your income relies on going to conventions. Hello! Drop the money on a good website and say hello to 2019!
